The Patriot Fund 2026 donation covered all the expenses of two Montana Retreats that allowed 14 veterans to reunite with the Marines they served with in Iraq during the worst of the combat operations in 2004 and 2005.
The first reunion consisted of six Combat Engineers who were attached to the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines during the 2004 Battle of Fallujah. Four of the six were Purple Heart recipients.
They enjoyed facilitated fireside discussions, group meals, fly-fishing, guided wilderness immersion, and the Post-Traumatic Winning Seminar. We strengthened bonds forged in war and promoted mental health and healing through outdoor experiences.
Here is a sample of the responses we received from them on our post trip survey:
“I don’t think I’ve ever felt as at peace as I did out on that river—just the sound of the rushing water and the absolute stillness of nature. The real highlight, though, was reconnecting with my engineer brothers. Hearing their stories about life post-Fallujah was eye-opening, deeply moving, and exactly what we all needed.”
“I am returning home better than when I left. I didn’t realize I needed to reconnect with my fellow Marines that I haven’t seen in 20 years”
“This trip has been more healing and helpful as it brought those of us who’ve actually served together into the same process. It was immensely rewarding to see those guys again”
“I am going home more relaxed and focused. I am now working on bettering myself and my family financially and professionally. This has helped me regain my focus and attention on what really matters.”
